History of Success in Design
Design and innovation are not new to Cleveland. The history of success began with the Industrial Revolution and formed an identity in the early 20th century with the success of Viktor Schreckengost, a native to Cleveland. He is credited with having a $250 billion impact on the U.S. economy because of the designs he developed and due to the success of the students that he educated. More recently, the success of Nottingham-Spirk Design Associates, creators of the Crest Spin Brush, demonstrate that design and innovation is in the DNA of Northeast Ohio.
Consumer Product Marketing and Manufacturing
Northeast Ohio is home to more than 40 consumer product brands, including: Kraftmaid, the largest cabinet manufacturer in the world, American Greetings, which houses the largest creative studio in the world and Moen, one of the largest plumbing manufacturers in the world. Companies like these fuel a product development infrastructure that includes design, engineering, marketing, sales, distribution, prototyping, material supply and manufacturing. The tools and culture to enable excellent in product development abound.
Higher Education
Commercial success is built on a prepared workforce. Institutions of higher learning in Northeast Ohio include: The Cleveland Institute of Art, which houses one of the top design programs in the U.S., Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve for engineering, which is home to some of the states highest rated schools of engineering, business and intellectual property law, Akron University, which is home to a world class polymer science program, and Kent State University, which is known for it’s fashion merchandising program. In addition, Cuyahoga Community College prepares outstanding technical and support professionals. These academic assets collectively ensure an abundance of well -rounded and prepared human resources.
